What is Randomized Control in A/B Testing?

A randomized control group in A/B testing refers to the practice of randomly dividing your audience into two groups: the control group receives version A (the original), and the other group receives version B (the variation). This randomization helps ensure that the results are unbiased and that any performance differences between the two groups can be directly attributed to the changes in the variable being tested.

In a well-structured A/B test, randomization reduces external factors that might skew the results. For example, it accounts for differences in user demographics, behaviors, and other variables that might otherwise affect how one version performs relative to the other.


Can I A/B Test Without a Randomized Control Group?

Yes, it’s possible to conduct an A/B test without a randomized control group, but there are important considerations and potential risks involved. In an ideal A/B test, randomization ensures that the results are reliable and not influenced by outside factors. When you skip randomization, you may introduce bias into your results, making it harder to determine whether the difference in performance is due to the changes in the variable or some other factor.


Increased Risk of Bias

Without randomization, you may unknowingly segment your audience in a way that introduces bias. For example, one group may consist of a higher percentage of returning customers, while the other has more first-time visitors. If this happens, any difference in the results might be attributed to these audience differences rather than the variable being tested.

Example: If version A of a landing page is shown mostly to new visitors and version B to returning visitors, the results could be skewed by the differences in user familiarity rather than the page design itself.


Alternatives to Randomized Control

While randomized control is the gold standard for A/B testing, there are alternatives you can use if randomization isn’t possible or practical:

  1. Pre-Post Testing or Regression Discontinuity
    Pre-post testing involves comparing performance before and after introducing a change. Instead of dividing your audience into two groups, you analyze the performance of the entire audience before the change (version A) and after the change (version B). This method is easier to implement but introduces greater risk of external factors influencing the results.
  2. Sequential Testing
    In sequential testing, you introduce version A for a set period, then introduce version B afterward. Although this method reduces complexity, it also allows for external factors like seasonality or marketing efforts to influence the outcome, making the results less reliable.
  3. Matched Market Testing or Difference in Differences Testing
    If randomization isn’t possible across individual users, brands may opt for matched market testing, where two geographic regions with similar characteristics are compared. One region receives the campaign or variation being tested, and the other does not. While this allows for regional insights, it still leaves room for differences between the regions that might affect the results.
